Many musicians and producers, when considering composing music for a film, think about the possibility of recording the music with an orchestra.
It is very difficult to give an exact answer to the possible costs since it depends on many factors, but mainly on two:
The amount of music to record
The number of musicians needed
How much music is in a movie?
Depending on the type of film, the music usually lasts between 30-40 minutes and up to 60-80 minutes (animated films).
How long does it take to record a soundtrack?
To record a soundtrack with an orchestra, we will need between 2 and 3 recording sessions for fiction films and approximately 4-5 sessions for more complex films, such as animated films.
How to calculate the time needed for recording?
The minutes of music recorded per session depend on several factors:
The difficulty of music.
The tempo of the music. When the music is faster we need more time to record.
Orchestra formation. Larger formations always require more time.
In any case, on average, we record about 20 minutes of music per hour of recording.
To record 40 minutes of music we will need 8-9 hours of recording.
How much time do we need for post-production: editing, mixing and mastering?
We will need approximately twice as much mixing time as recording time. That is, one day of recording and two days of mixing.
This depends primarily on the complexity of the mix and whether there are other elements to add to the orchestral recording.
So, how much does it cost to record with an orchestra?
Certainly much less than you think. Because we need a lot of information to be able to make a detailed estimate, please contact us at: info@bso.sk and we will answer all your questions and make suggestions to make the recording as effective as possible.
